Storytelling is an ancient form of communication that has been used for millennia to share stories, information, and lessons from one person or group with another.
Storytelling is a powerful tool for helping people to feel more connected. There are many different types of stories that we tell as humans, but they all have one thing in common: They make your audience want or need something specific from you--whether it's entertainment value or emotional investment
Storytellers can help make your company more visible by telling compelling tales about how it solves problems they face every day - something we all know helps sell anything!
It's not only effective at helping us reach our customers but also getting their attention in a world where messages are often unclear. You see, often what we think we're saying to our customers and what our customers hear, are two different things.
And our customers are making buying decisions every single day, not based on what we think we said, but based on what they heard. So, the key here to be seen, heard and understood is clarity.
That's where storytelling comes into play. You see, storytelling can help you clarify your message because it builds a genuine emotional connection with your customers, and that emotional connection is what drives them to action. The heart of your message should be the story you want to tell.
Storytelling is not going anywhere, and successful companies are taking advantage of it every day. Want more proof? On August 02, 2016, Instagram introduced the new “story” feature.
Today, we’re introducing Instagram Stories, a new feature that lets you share all the moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile. As you share multiple photos and videos, they appear together in a slideshow format: your story. Source: about.instagram.com/features/stories
The most advantageous aspect of this feature is the ability of followers to interact with you through your stories. Wow, talk about connecting with others!
The power behind storytelling goes beyond connecting on an emotional level; it is also a science. Whenever we hear stories, there are certain chemicals that our brain releases into our bodies; those chemicals drive our emotions, and our emotions drives us to take action.
One of those powerful chemicals is Dopamine. Dopamine is the chemical that makes us feel good, and when it's released, our brain activates learning receptors that allows us to focus more, this means, we can learn more easily, retain information better (which equals increased motivation), and even remember things faster!
Another powerful chemical it’s Oxytocin. Oxytocin is such a powerful chemical- the same one released in our mother’s body after she gives birth to her baby and has been shown time after again as being responsible for building initial trust between human beings, which leads us on towards understanding how important empathy can be when communicating with others (including potential clients/customers.)
Empathy leads to trust, and trust is the foundation of business. Remember, people only do business with people they trust, people they like. That’s why in order to build trust you must first try to evoke empathy in your customers, and one of the best ways to do that is with the power of storytelling.
Maya Angelou said, “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
facts, data, figures, numbers tell, stories sell! So, start selling by telling good stories.
